The earliest reference we have dates back to 1921, when the house was built on a lot at the corner of Callejón Bedmar and Calle Castillo, and it belonged to the same family for decades.
The building, with two main floors and an attic on the roof, served a variety of purposes: an ophthalmologist’s office on the second floor, a grocery store, a fabric shop, and, finally, a painter’s studio on the ground floor.
In recent years, it had fallen into serious disrepair after standing vacant for a long time, until we arrived, saw its potential, and breathed new life into it.

We’ll help you discover our favorite spots, the most appealing things to do, and the most special restaurants. Whether you’re a traveler who’s only staying for a few days or planning to stay for a while, at La Colonial Suites you’ll find your place in the world.
Our location next to the Plaza and the Ermita del Espíritu Santo is one of the most beautiful and historic spots in the old quarter. In the center stands Europe’s first covered fountain, designed by Manuel Ponce de León y Falcón and inaugurated in 1867. Next to it, the Ermita del Espíritu Santo, dating from 1615, is dedicated to the Cristo del Buen Fin.

Just a few meters from La Colonial Suites, you’ll find the Museo Canario, the Cathedral of Santa Ana, the Casa de Colón, the Atlantic Center of Modern Art, and several charming churches and squares. In addition, every Sunday there’s a craft market in the historic streets, and major festivals are held around the Plaza de Santa Ana, such as the Jazz Festival and the Christmas Concert. Holy Week is another highlight you won’t want to miss.
Archaeology and culture of Gran Canaria, just a few meters away.
The great icon of Vegueta, just a short walk away.

Contemporary art in the historic district.

At La Colonial Suites, we believe in second chances, which is why we strive to leave as small a footprint as possible.
Virtually all of our furniture has had a previous life: we scour antique shops, flea markets, street markets, and auctions to rescue beautiful pieces. The furniture has been restored by the Obra Social team, an initiative where people at risk of social and labor exclusion have found a safe haven and a profession.

We preserve the essence of the house and its structural elements: thick walls, stone walls, and wooden ceilings that act as natural insulation.
That’s why we didn’t install air conditioning: the size of the windows and the way they open promote airflow that ventilates the house from one end to the other. In addition, we have solar panels and heat pumps in each apartment, which contribute to more efficient energy management.
